academy
Scholarly society's home
An academy is a school or institution for specialized training: a military academy, a police academy, a dance academy.
The word also denotes learned societies that set standards or honor achievement in a field: the French Academy, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Academy Award derives from the latter.
In casual use, academy sometimes appears in school names without implying special status. (Capitalized Academy may refer to Plato's school or a specific institution.)
