mental asylums
Historic psychiatric facilities
Mental asylums is the plural of mental asylum, an older term for psychiatric hospitals—institutions housing people with severe mental illness.
The word asylum originally meant sanctuary or refuge, but mental asylum acquired dark connotations from historical abuses: overcrowding, neglect, and forced treatments.
The term now sounds dated or pejorative; modern usage prefers psychiatric hospital or mental health facility.
The old mental asylum on the hill had been abandoned for decades.
