padded cell
Soft-walled enclosure
A padded cell is a room with soft, cushioned walls designed to prevent self-injury, found in psychiatric hospitals and sometimes prisons.
The padding keeps agitated or violent patients from harming themselves by throwing their bodies against hard surfaces.
Figuratively, padded cell evokes extreme mental disturbance or the threat of institutionalization: One more day of this and they'll put me in a padded cell.
