angiosperm

Seed-bearing flowering plant

An angiosperm is a flowering plant—one that produces seeds enclosed within a fruit, as opposed to conifers and other gymnosperms whose seeds are exposed.

Angiosperms dominate most terrestrial ecosystems and include grasses, hardwood trees, and nearly all food crops.

The term is botanical rather than everyday: Angiosperms first diversified in the Cretaceous period.
