perianth

Outer flower whorls

The perianth is the outer part of a flower surrounding the reproductive organs—collectively, the petals and sepals.

In flowers where petals and sepals look similar, like tulips and lilies, the individual parts are called tepals.

Botanists use perianth when discussing flower structure without distinguishing between the colorful petals and the protective sepals beneath them.
