ginkgo
Fan-leaved ancient
Ginkgo is a tree with distinctive fan-shaped leaves, native to China and now planted worldwide as an ornamental.
It's the sole surviving species of an ancient plant division—a living fossil unchanged for millions of years.
The seeds, though foul-smelling when ripe, are eaten in East Asian cuisine.
Also spelled gingko.
