Peculiar to place
Endemic describes something native to or constantly present in a particular place or population.
A disease endemic to a region occurs there regularly without needing outside introduction: Malaria is endemic to tropical climates.
The word extends to any characteristic feature of a place: Corruption was endemic in the department.
In ecology, endemic species exist naturally only in one location: The lemur is endemic to Madagascar.
