xylem

Tree's water pipes

Xylem is the tissue in vascular plants that conducts water and dissolved minerals upward from the roots.

It forms the woody core of stems and trunks—what we call wood is largely dead xylem cells.

The term pairs with phloem, which carries sugars downward: The xylem and phloem form the plant's vascular system.
