monocotyledon

One seed leaf

A monocotyledon is a flowering plant whose seed contains a single embryonic leaf, or cotyledon.

Monocots include grasses, lilies, orchids, and palms.

Their leaves typically have parallel veins, and their flower parts come in multiples of three.

The term contrasts with dicotyledon, which has two seed leaves.

Often shortened to monocot.
