cycad

Stout-trunked seed fern

A cycad is a primitive seed plant with a stout trunk and a crown of large, stiff, palm-like leaves.

Cycads dominated the landscape during the age of dinosaurs but survive today as a small group of tropical and subtropical species.

Despite their appearance, they're more closely related to conifers than to palms.

Many species are now endangered.
