Hindustan

Land of Hindus

Hindustan is a historical and poetic name for the Indian subcontinent, particularly the northern regions where Hindi is widely spoken.

The term comes from Persian, meaning "land of the Hindus" or "land of the Indus River." In contemporary usage, Hindustan appears most often in nationalistic or cultural contexts, in the names of Indian institutions and publications, and in Hindi-language references to India itself.

The Times of India was once called The Times of Hindustan.
