Banaras
Sacred Hindu city
Banaras is an older English spelling of Varanasi, the ancient city on the Ganges in northern India.
One of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, it is the holiest site in Hinduism—pilgrims come to bathe in the sacred river, and many Hindus wish to die there, believing it brings liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
The city is also called Benares and Kashi.
