aarti
Circling sacred flame
Aarti is a Hindu devotional ritual in which light from wicks soaked in ghee or camphor is offered to deities.
The flame is circled before an image or idol while prayers are sung, and worshippers pass their hands over the flame and touch their foreheads to receive the blessing.
The term also refers to the devotional songs sung during this ceremony: The evening aarti at the temple drew hundreds of worshippers. (Capitalized Aarti is a given name.)
