Morning's first light
Sunrise is the moment when the sun appears above the horizon at the beginning of day, and by extension, the period of light and color surrounding that moment: We watched the sunrise from the beach.
The word also names the direction where the sun rises—east—though this use is old-fashioned.
Figuratively, sunrise suggests beginnings or early stages: the sunrise of civilization, sunrise industries.
