darshan

Glimpsing the divine

Darshan is a Sanskrit term for the experience of seeing and being seen by a deity, holy person, or sacred object.

In Hindu practice, devotees seek darshan at temples or from spiritual teachers—the visual exchange itself carries spiritual benefit.

The concept extends to any auspicious viewing: We went to the ashram for darshan with the guru.

Also spelled darshana.
