Benares

Hindu pilgrimage destination

Benares is the former English name for Varanasi, a city in northern India on the Ganges River.

One of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, it is sacred to Hindus as a place of pilgrimage and cremation: He traveled to Benares to scatter his father's ashes in the Ganges.

The name Varanasi is now standard, though Benares persists in older texts and some traditional contexts.
