Astana

Central Asian capital

Astana is the capital of Kazakhstan, located in the north-central steppe.

The city was renamed from Akmola in 1998 when it replaced Almaty as the capital.

It was briefly called Nur-Sultan (2019–2022) after former president Nursultan Nazarbayev, before reverting to Astana.

The name means "capital" in Kazakh.
