U-boats

Atlantic warfare vessels

U-boats were German submarines, particularly those used in World Wars I and II to attack Allied shipping.

The term comes from German *Unterseeboot* (undersea boat).

U-boats conducted devastating campaigns against merchant vessels and warships, making them central to naval warfare in both conflicts: The convoy was scattered by U-boat attacks in the North Atlantic.
