surface ships
Fleet above water
Surface ships are naval vessels that operate on the water's surface, as distinguished from submarines.
The term appears in military contexts when the distinction matters: The fleet included both surface ships and attack submarines.
Destroyers, cruisers, aircraft carriers, and frigates are all surface ships.
