Enigma

Wartime encryption device

Enigma refers to the German cipher machine used during World War II, whose encrypted military communications were famously broken by Allied codebreakers at Bletchley Park.

The machine and the effort to crack it feature prominently in histories of cryptography and computing: Alan Turing's work on Enigma helped shorten the war. (Lowercase enigma means something puzzling or mysterious.)
