convoy escorts
Warships guarding ships
Convoy escorts are military vessels or aircraft assigned to protect a group of ships traveling together.
The term emerged from naval warfare, where merchant ships needed defense against submarines and raiders.
Escort ships screen the convoy, detect threats, and engage attackers: Destroyer escorts circled the merchant fleet throughout the Atlantic crossing.
