depth charges

Underwater antisubmarine weapons

Depth charges are explosive devices designed to detonate underwater at a preset depth, used primarily for attacking submarines.

Dropped from ships or aircraft, they sink and explode when water pressure triggers the fuse.

The term sometimes appears figuratively for delayed revelations or attacks: The interview contained depth charges that wouldn't detonate until the book was published.
