Shogun

Japan's military ruler

Shogun is the title held by Japan's military dictators from the late twelfth century until 1868.

Though emperors remained as figureheads, shoguns wielded actual political and military power.

The word comes from Japanese for "general." Today it appears in historical contexts and as a metaphor for someone with absolute authority: He runs that company like a shogun.
