Charlemagne

Medieval European unifier

Charlemagne was king of the Franks from 768 and emperor of the Romans from 800 until his death in 814.

He united much of Western Europe through conquest and alliance, earning the epithet "father of Europe." His name, meaning "Charles the Great," appears in references to medieval European power and the idea of a unified Christian empire: a Charlemagne of the business world.
