Tokugawa Shogunate

Japan's military rulers

The Tokugawa Shogunate was the military government that ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868, headquartered in Edo (modern Tokyo).

Founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu after his victory at Sekigahara, it maintained peace through strict social hierarchy, isolationist policies, and control over regional lords.

The era ended when Western pressure and internal tensions led to the Meiji Restoration.

Also called the Edo period or Edo Shogunate.
