shogi

Eastern chess variant

Shogi is Japanese chess, played on a nine-by-nine board with twenty pieces per side.

The distinctive feature is that captured pieces can be returned to the board as your own—a rule that makes draws rare and endgames complex.

Pieces are flat wedges with Japanese characters, all the same color, distinguished only by which direction they point.
