Roman art
Colosseum-era aesthetics
Roman art encompasses the visual arts produced in ancient Rome and its territories, from roughly the 8th century BCE through the fall of the Western Empire.
The Romans absorbed Greek artistic traditions while developing distinctive forms: portrait busts with unflinching realism, triumphal arches, monumental public buildings, elaborate mosaics, and wall paintings like those preserved at Pompeii.
Roman art served political and commemorative purposes—columns and reliefs celebrated military victories, while imperial portraits projected power.
The term distinguishes this tradition from Greek art, which preceded and heavily influenced it.
