apotheosis

Elevation to divinity

Apotheosis is the elevation of a person to divine status, or more broadly, the highest point or most perfect example of something.

The word comes from Greek roots meaning "to make a god," and this origin illuminates both uses: Roman emperors underwent literal apotheosis after death, while we now speak of a film as the apotheosis of the Western genre or a performance as the apotheosis of her career.

The term suggests not just excellence but a culminating, transcendent quality—the ultimate expression of a type or ideal.
