coffered ceiling
Grid of indentations
A coffered ceiling has a grid of recessed panels, typically square or rectangular, formed by intersecting beams.
The sunken sections are called coffers.
The design appears in classical architecture and grand public buildings, adding visual depth and perceived height: The library's coffered ceiling gave the room an air of gravitas.
