modern art
Recent artistic movements
Modern art refers to artistic works produced roughly from the 1860s through the 1970s, characterized by deliberate departure from traditional techniques and subjects.
The term encompasses movements like Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism.
Modern art often prioritizes experimentation, subjective expression, and challenges to conventional aesthetics over realistic representation.
The museum's modern art wing features Picasso and Pollock.
Distinct from contemporary art, which describes work being made now.
