Lares
Roman hearth spirits
Lares is the plural of Lar, referring to the guardian deities of ancient Roman households.
These spirits protected the family and home, receiving offerings at domestic shrines.
The phrase Lares and Penates names these household gods collectively, and figuratively means one's home and treasured belongings: After years abroad, she longed for her Lares and Penates. (Lowercase lares is the same word in less formal contexts.)
