amphorae
Two-handled Greek vessels
Amphorae is the plural of amphora, a tall two-handled ceramic jar with a narrow neck, used in ancient Greece and Rome for storing and transporting wine, oil, and grain.
The shape—wide body tapering to a point—allowed the vessels to be stacked in ship holds or stood upright in sand.
Amphorae appear frequently in classical art and archaeology: The divers recovered amphorae from the shipwreck.
