Bight of Benin
West African gulf
The Bight of Benin is a bay in the Gulf of Guinea along the western coast of Africa, stretching roughly from Ghana to Nigeria.
The region was historically central to the transatlantic slave trade, giving rise to the grim sailor's rhyme: Beware, beware the Bight of Benin, where few come out though many go in—a warning about disease and death on the coast.
