ghost towns
Empty former boomtowns
Ghost towns are abandoned settlements, typically former mining or frontier communities that emptied when the industry or resource that sustained them disappeared.
The American West has hundreds of ghost towns from the gold rush era.
The term extends to any place that has lost its population or vitality: The mall became a ghost town after the anchor stores closed.
