ghost town
Deserted former community
A ghost town is a place that was once a thriving settlement but has been abandoned or nearly abandoned by its inhabitants.
Many ghost towns in the American West were mining communities that emptied out when the ore ran dry.
The term extends figuratively to any place that feels eerily deserted: Downtown becomes a ghost town after 6 p.m.
The mall was a ghost town on weekday mornings.
