tunneling

Digging through earth

Tunneling is the process of digging or constructing a tunnel—an underground or underwater passage.

The word extends to any movement through a confined space: The mole was tunneling through the garden.

In computing, tunneling sends data through a network by encapsulating it within another protocol, creating a secure pathway.

In physics, quantum tunneling describes particles passing through barriers they shouldn't classically be able to penetrate.

Also spelled tunnelling.
