Nineveh

Ancient Mesopotamian metropolis

Nineveh was an ancient city on the Tigris River in what is now northern Iraq, capital of the Assyrian Empire at its height.

In the Bible, it appears as the destination where Jonah reluctantly preached after escaping the whale, and as a symbol of worldly power brought low by divine judgment.

The name now evokes ancient grandeur and fallen empires.
