wax tablets

Reusable writing surfaces

Wax tablets were writing surfaces used in ancient and medieval times, consisting of wooden boards coated with a layer of wax into which marks could be scratched with a pointed stylus.

The flat end of the stylus could smooth the wax to erase text, making these tablets reusable—an early erasable notepad.

They served for everyday notes, drafts, accounting, and schoolwork rather than permanent records.

Multiple tablets could be bound together into a codex, prefiguring the format of modern books.
