Eastern Europe
Poland's broader region
Eastern Europe is the eastern portion of the European continent, though its boundaries shift with political context.
During the Cold War, it meant the Soviet-aligned communist states: Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, East Germany, and sometimes the USSR itself.
Since 1991, the term has become fuzzier—some former Soviet states now identify as Central European or simply European.
She grew up in Eastern Europe before the Wall fell.
The phrase often carries connotations of post-communist transition, economic development, or cultural distinction from Western Europe.
