Estonia
Northernmost Baltic state
Estonia is a small Baltic country in northeastern Europe, bordered by the Baltic Sea, Latvia, and Russia, with a population of roughly 1.4 million.
It regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and has since become known for its digital innovation, including e-governance and the birthplace of Skype.
Estonia joined the European Union in 2004.
The Estonian language is closely related to Finnish rather than to its Baltic neighbors' languages.
