Bohemia

Western Czech region

Bohemia is a historical region in central Europe, now the western part of the Czech Republic.

Prague is its principal city.

The term gave rise to *bohemian*—an unconventional artist or writer living outside bourgeois society—from the mistaken belief that Romani people originated there.

The cafés of Bohemia attracted painters and poets from across Europe. (Lowercase bohemia refers to artistic counterculture.)
