Marshall Plan

European recovery program

The Marshall Plan was the American program of economic aid to Western European countries after World War II, officially called the European Recovery Program.

Named for Secretary of State George Marshall, it provided billions of dollars between 1948 and 1952 to rebuild war-devastated economies and counter Soviet influence.

The term now evokes any large-scale recovery initiative: We need a Marshall Plan for climate change.
