Hashemite

Jordan's ruling family

Hashemite refers to a member of the Arab dynasty descended from Hashim, the great-grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad.

The Hashemites ruled Mecca for centuries and briefly governed Syria, Iraq, and the Hejaz region of Arabia.

Today the term most often appears in connection with Jordan, officially the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, where the dynasty still reigns: King Abdullah II is a Hashemite monarch.
