Al-Aqsa Mosque

Hilltop Islamic sanctuary

Al-Aqsa Mosque is an Islamic holy site in the Old City of Jerusalem, part of a complex Muslims call the Noble Sanctuary and Jews call the Temple Mount.

Built in the 8th century, it is considered the third holiest site in Islam after Mecca and Medina.

The mosque and surrounding compound are a persistent flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Clashes erupted at Al-Aqsa during Ramadan.

Also spelled al-Aqsa.
