Dunkirk evacuation
Wartime channel crossing
The Dunkirk evacuation was the rescue of Allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk, France, in May–June 1940, after German forces had trapped them against the English Channel.
Over 330,000 troops were ferried to Britain by naval vessels and hundreds of civilian boats.
The event has become a symbol of resilience in desperate circumstances: a Dunkirk spirit, pulling off our own Dunkirk.
