Flanders

Where poppies grew

Flanders is a region in northern Belgium where Dutch (Flemish) is the primary language, historically extending into parts of France and the Netherlands.

The area was a major medieval center of trade and textile production, and its fields became synonymous with World War I battlegrounds, immortalized in the poem "In Flanders Fields." The tour included the medieval cities of Flanders.

The name also appears as a surname, most recognizably belonging to the devoutly religious neighbor character in *The Simpsons*.
