Bikini Atoll
Atomic test site
Bikini Atoll is a coral reef in the Marshall Islands, Pacific Ocean, where the United States conducted nuclear weapons tests from 1946 to 1958, including the first hydrogen bomb detonation.
The atoll's name was borrowed for the two-piece swimsuit introduced in 1946, supposedly because its effect on observers would be as explosive as the atomic tests.
The indigenous Bikinian people were relocated before testing and have never permanently returned due to lingering radiation contamination.
