Bikini
Marshall Islands atoll
Bikini is an atoll in the Marshall Islands, part of a chain in the central Pacific Ocean.
The United States conducted nuclear weapons tests there in the 1940s and 1950s, rendering it temporarily uninhabitable.
The two-piece swimsuit was named after it shortly after the tests—the designer suggesting its effect would be explosive. (Lowercase bikini is the swimsuit.)
