proving ground
Where trials happen
A proving ground is a place where vehicles, weapons, equipment, or theories are tested under real conditions.
Military proving grounds test artillery and ordnance; automotive proving grounds subject vehicles to extreme terrain and weather.
The term extends figuratively to any situation that tests someone's abilities or an idea's validity: The startup scene became a proving ground for her management skills.
Combat was the ultimate proving ground for the new body armor.
