nuclear proliferation
Atomic arms spread
Nuclear proliferation is the spread of nuclear weapons, weapons technology, or fissile material to countries that don't already possess them.
The term usually carries negative connotations—proliferation is something to be prevented or controlled: The treaty aims to stop nuclear proliferation.
Nations with nuclear arsenals are said to proliferate when they share weapons technology with others.
The opposite concept is nonproliferation.
